Project staff met with community partners to continue the development of a community health worker (CHW) and promotora training curriculum on Wednesday September 25. The team met at Salud Para La Gente’s Watsonville clinic and spent the meeting discussing general project updates, reviewing the risks checklist, and brainstorming engagement opportunities among university students, faculty, and community-based organizations (CBOs).
The risks checklist assesses farmworkers exposure to climate-related health risks and labor rights violations. Respondents will remain anonymous but the responses will be shared with California Rural Legal Assistance, a nonprofit law firm founded that provides free civil legal services to low-income residents of California’s rural counties. Responses to the checklist will also be used plot the sites of the climate-related health risks and rights violations on a data dashboard, which is another project that the team is developing. The data dashboard will show the environmental risks posed to farmworkers in California including pesticide exposure, poor air quality, water quality and access, and extreme heat.
